9

Light embers glowing beyond trees
Deer's head staring thoughtlessly, mirror-reflected,
You, clock-watching by the wave-pool,
A fashionable mystery where ions gather,
As night comes in ineluctable colors,
The limpid lightning-washed clouds
Hovering above the day's burning mellow,
Flowers of the desert by the window,
Pavement garbage, carwheels, under which
Squirrels scatter. A bird eyes carefully
The orts of bread neglected on the sundial.
Here, which is elsewhere, plastic glasses
Help plasmic eyes, TV soaked brains.
I see us through the trees, beyond us,
Where deers and turtles eye jealously
Our scones and scraps, our dreams.
